Offer Image
Combine active hiking in the footsteps of the stampeders along the Chilkoot Trail with a scenic float on the the river on this half day program.

Scenic Hike & Taiya River Raft Float Tour in Skagway, Alaska

Setting out from downtown Skagway toward your Scenic Hike and Float Excursion, you will drive 10 eye-popping miles along the coastal road to the head of the Chilkoot Trail in Dyea, once an abandoned Gold Rush town, and now a National Park.

On your 1.5 to 2 hour hike, you will retrace the steps of the Gold Rush stampeders on the famous Chilkoot Trail, hiking through a green, moss-covered northern temperate rainforest over uneven, hilly terrain for the first mile, and then on mostly flat ground for the remainder. The total elevation gain on this Skagway shore trip is 300 feet. You will learn about the gold rush and natural history, and have time for taking photos. The total distance hiked on this moderate trail is approximately 2 miles.

At the end of the one-way hike, you will meet with the raft and suit up for a relaxing river float on the tranquil Taiya River. Along with your group of at most 11 guests, you will sit back and let your guide do the paddling. As you float along, they will point out wildlife, native plants, and tell stories of the area's fascinating history. The float time on this Skagway rafting excursion is approximately 40 to 45 minutes on the river. After the rafting, enjoy a riverside snack.

Please Note: The hiking part of this Alaska tour is strenuous and requires guests to be in good physical shape.
